The Venturers have had a very busy spring, beginning with a private tour of the Senate and Centre Block with Senator Marjorie LeBreton. Later in March, we joined the Scouts for an evening of laser tag and an afternoon of curling at the Granite Club. Due to the extended winter, we were able to skate and play a bit of hockey the last week of March on our greenbelt pond. Also this year, twelve Scouting youth and leaders took a boating basics course in order to obtain our Pleasure Craft Operator Card. Thanks to our own Don Partridge for helping to set this up for us. In mid-April, with some snow still on the ground, we did an evening of geocaching in the western greenbelt. In late April (finally with no snow on the ground), we were able to participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, cleaning up a portion of the river shoreline & creeks/ponds in Andrew Haydon Park. Our spring camp was a backpacking trek through Frontenac Provincial Park in early May, camping both nights in the interior, and doing some little side-hikes to natural and historic spots of interest. In May, we joined the groundhogs, ducks, squirrels, and geese of Bate Island and had an evening BBQ and some ad-hoc games of frisbee & ball. Later in May we biked from the church out into the western greenbelt and back. Early June saw about 150 members of our current Scouting family (and a few recent graduates) join us for our annual BBQ in the park next to the church on a beautiful summer evening, followed by the viewing of the always anticipated highlight films of video clips from our Scouting year set to music, in the Banquet Hall. Though the BBQ typically signals the end of our program year, this year, all four of the sections, including some 35 or so Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, and leaders paid a visit to our new friends and neighbours in the Carlingwood Retirement residence next to the church and led a bit of a campfire program and sing-a-long, followed by refreshments and mingling, getting to know our new neighbours, with the youth telling the residents of their adventurers in Scouting this year, and our senior friends telling us all kinds of interesting stories.
This will be the final Scouting article by this reporter, as, after 17 years of commitment to the 96th Ottawa Scout Group, I have decided to take a bit of a step back. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those in the Woodroffe community who have been so supportive and interested in all our activities over these many years. Many of these activities and traditions will continue (yes, I expect maple syrup will continue next Spring) as the group is strong and has many dedicated leadership teams in place.
(Editor's note: Peter does not mention that at the spring BBQ, there was a tribute to his exceptional leadership over the years. A number of former Scouts, Venturers and leaders returned to help celebrate. The cake also acknowledged other departures from the leadership team.)
COVID note: Although in person services have resumed, some church meetings may have alternate locations or virtual arrangements.
