Leader: Gathered as a community,
People: we experience our common heritage
as God’s people.
Leader: Gathered as a community,
People: we experience our common foundation in God’s word.
Leader: Gathered as a community,
People: we experience our common challenge as those marked with the cross of
Jesus.
Lenten Candle Liturgy
| Reader 1: |
Parades always draw a crowd. Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem
on the back of a donkey was a good time for a cheering throng. They thought
he was going to become their king, but Jesus knew that this was really
a funeral procession. He challenged the authorities with his parade and
they responded as Christ had expected. No rural rabbi, no peasant wise
man was going to overthrow their comfortable political scheme to stay in
power. So this parade terminated in a court decision. The One whom the
crowds hailed with such enthusiasm was the One who was to be crucified.
But little did anyone who cheered him on that day realize how the story
would play out in the end, not with a death but with a resurrection. |
| Reader 2: |
(Lighting six purple candles) Blessed is the One who comes in the name
of the Lord. |
All: God of celebration and sacrifice, gather us along the parade route that
we also might Hail the One you sent to save and redeem. Let our praise ring
out to the rafters. Let our songs of joy reach the heavens. May the coming
of Christ into our world of terror bring peace to those caught in war, light
to those who live in darkness, and hope to all who see nothing but despair.
We stand by the side of the road, waiting to catch a glimpse of the One who
comes for us, and we pray in His name. Amen.
